Academics

This page details my academic coursework throughout my time at Clemson University. Courses for my Spanish major are listed in sections of Language and Cultural classes. Courses for my History major are also listed in a separate section, showing the diverse and wide variety of coursework I have taken. Course samples of academic pieces that I have completed are listed under the subsections Spanish Linguistics Proficiency, Cultural Competency, and Humanities Proficiency, which can be accessed through clicking the corresponding buttons.

Spanish Language Coursework

Span 2010 Intermediate Spanish

  • This course sought to educate students of the basics of Spanish grammar and general conjugation forms. The course also had lessons detailing other practical, day-to-day topics of daily life, such as weather and time. The course also entailed real-world conversational practice via conversations with Spanish speakers abroad over video call

Span 3020 Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition

  • This course went in depth into the writing abilities of students. Along with learning new grammar forms and rules, students were expected to be able to write in-depth and lengthy pieces to demonstrate ability to write detailed reports and essays on topics. Students were introduced to Hispanic literary works, and began to have awareness of literary and cultural trends in the Spanish Speaking world. Conversational skills were also practiced through lengthy video calls with individuals from Spanish speaking countries.

Span 2020 Intermediate Spanish

This course is a direct continuation of Spanish 2010, where grammar rules and conjugation forms learned in Spanish 2010 are reviewed, as well as new grammar rules and conjugation forms are taught. This course became repetitive at times, and the course spent much more time on busy work than projects to express student understanding.

Span 310 Spanish Conversational and Oral Skills /Span 3999 Transfer Elective (Abroad)

  • This course heavily focused on real-world everyday Spanish conversation. Current cultural topics were instructed, as well as conversational mannerisms and expressions that are common place in Spain. This course often used student presentations and group projects for students to demonstrate their abilities to speak for lengthy periods of time, as well as be able to hold a conversation in Spanish.

Span 3050 Intermediate Spanish Conversation/Composition

This course began with the reviewing of grammar lessons learned from previous courses, and then went into many group projects to demonstrate speaking skills. Presentations and projects were commonplace in this course, as the student’s objective was to learn about new topics and demonstrate their ability to discuss in length different subjects to show complex understanding of conversational Spanish

Span 410 Advanced Spanish Grammar-Composition 1/Span 4090 Comprehensive Writing in Spanish (Abroad)

  • This course looked heavily into complex grammar in the Spanish language and instructed students on difficult topics relating to grammar. This course also tested students’ composition skills and instructed them to demonstrate their abilities to comprehend grammar and language rules, and express their understanding through essays or reports relating to cultural or literary topics. Vocabulary was also taught, with many day to day words were instructed to students, which the students would relay their comprehension through presentations or projects.

Critical Thinking essay:
"Los Padres Helicopteros"

This essay discusses the negative impacts that "helicopter" parents have on the development of children. This sample uses source analysis and construction of an elaborate argument in Spanish to construct an argumentative essay

Cultural Analysis Essay: "Los Dos Españas"

This essay analyzes in Spanish the political divide in Spain throughout the 19th century, and how the impacts carried over and affected the subsequent events in the 20th century.

Spanish Culture Coursework

Span 3070 The Hispanic World: Spain

  • This course was a cultural course that investigated the history and culture of Spain, beginning from the initial settlements of the Iberian Peninsula to well into the 20th century. This course detailed all the different settlements and cultures that intermingled in Spain, as well as the periods of civilizations that occupied the country. The course explained how each of these cultures influenced the country of Spain, and how Spanish culture developed through out the centuries into what it is today.

Hist 3410 History of Modern Mexico

  • This course detailed the history of Mexico, from its founding to the present day. The course was very interactive and used live and interactive demonstrations of different subjects to allow students to relate and comprehend more efficiently the developments of the country over its history. The course effectively tied the past to the present and investigated the roots for issues that now face the country, or had been facing the country since its conception

Span 490 Modern Spanish Literature (Short Story)/Span 4010 New Spanish Fiction

  • This course investigated the literature of Spanish writers throughout the 20th century. Providing historical contexts, this course described trends throughout the century and their relations to the cultural or historical developments of the nation at that time. This course was interactive as students were instructed to produce their similar literary work in the different styles of the 20th century, to better understand the writers of that era, and be able to comprehend their emotions and motives for their writing.

Span 490 Modern Spanish Literature (Poetry)/Span 4990 Selected Topics (Abroad)

  • This course investigated the poetry of Spain throughout the 20th century. This course went through the different literary generations of Spain during the century, and detailed the historical contexts that had influences on the styles and content of each generation’s styles and tone. The lives of notable figures from each generation were analyzed to piece together influences and motives that inspired them to write, as well as write the way that they did.

Cultural Competency Coursework Samples

Art Analysis Essay: "The History of Mexico"

This essay is an analysis of Mexican Painter Diego Rivera's mural, "The History of Mexico". This essay uses themes and topics of Mexican history to interpret the meanings and significances of the mural.

Cultural Analysis Essay: "Final Exam, Modern Mexico History

This essay was used for my final exam for History 3410, History of Modern Mexico. The exam structure was to be in our own words, describe 2 aspects of the course as if speaking to a friend and a parent as well as describe 1 item brought in for the class, and how it relates to mexico's hisotry.

History Coursework

Hist 1720 The West in the World 1

  • This course gave a general overview of human history, beginning from pre-history to the Renaissance, focusing mainly on the Mediterranean world. Influential figures and historical events throughout thousands of years were discussed, as well as their impacts on human development. This course was a large introductory course, and so individual projects were not prioritized.

Hist 1730 The West and the World II

  • This course gave a general overview of human history in the western world from the Renaissance to present day. This course is a continuation of Hist 1720, and so the structure was identical as a large lecture hall class with little prioritization on individual projects.

Hist 3010 American Revolution and New Nation

  • This course investigated the causes of the American Revolution, the Revolution itself, as well as the process of developing the United States of America in the aftermath. This course was very interactive, as outside trips to local sites significant during this time were taken, as well as hands-on experience of analyzing historical documents using methods utilized by historians were a significant component of this course.

Hist 2990 Seminar: The Historians Craft

  • This course detailed the processes of historical research and historical investigation. The instructor would use examples of how historians would research and view a certain topic they were investigating, as well as what methods they used. Students were able to demonstrate these methods to gain an understanding of them. Students were then assigned to produce a large research project on a topic of their choice using the methods they have been instructed.

Hist 3900 Modern Military History

  • This course detailed the military history of the Western World beginning mostly from the 19th century until the present. The developments of warfare, as well as tactics and technology were investigated, and their effects on warfare were analyzed. Historical documents and first-person accounts of conflicts were used to understand the conditions and struggles of different battlefields of various conflicts.

Hist 3970 History of the Modern Middle East

  • This course went through the history of various nations within the Middle East region, each with their unique struggles and internal conflicts. The themes of independence and democracy were heavily emphasized in this course, as such topics were the main struggles of nations at this time. Projects researching notable figures and significant events were popular in this course, and investigation of letters, essays, and documents from this era allowed students to understand the sentiments and struggles of the area during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Hist 3170 History of Native American Religion and Culture

  • This course spent much of its duration looking into the philosophy and sociology of religious studies during the 19th and early 20th century, to lay groundwork to explain the differences of religious views of Native Americans and the Western World. This course went through many notable figures of the religious sectors of philosophy and sociology. Understandings of native American culture were instructed along with these philosophical and sociological developments. Some projects and research assignments helped understandings of Native American culture of various tribes

Hist 3030 Civil War and Reconstruction

  • This course investigated the root causes of the American Civil War throughout American History, as well as the war and the aftermath of the war and its impacts that last until today. Research of different historical developments leading up to the war were utilized, allowing students to piece together where different events influenced the causes of the war. Students also pieced together the aftermath of the war, and investigated the failures of Reconstruction, and how those failures persist to today.

Humanities Proficiency Coursework Samples

Literary analysis essay: "El Muerto"

This essay is an analysis of the short story "El Muerto" by Jorge Luis Borges. This essay analyzes a variety of topics including the effect of the use of space in the story, as well as the psychological profiles of the characters and how they develop through the story

Spanish Conversation: "Informe de una Pelicula"

This is a video discussion I had in Spanish with a classmate for my Spanish 3050 class with Dr. Garcia on September 24th, 2023 where we discussed the movie Bajo la Misma Luna in Spanish that we saw, talking about the themes and impacts of the movie
